With so much going on in our day to day lives, many often wonder how we've managed to get where we are. How did we go from being such innocent, carefree children to the hustle and bustle of daily life as an adult? We make decisions every day that impact our lives in astounding ways, however minor they may seem. Sometimes, the only decision we need to make, is the one that gives us a break from the norm. A trip to one of Abacoís many Cays is a perfect way to unwind and relax. Man-O-War Cay is one of my favourite places to visit for a day or weekend away from everything.
I like to start my day by grabbing a delicious iced coffee from Bliss Coffee House in Marsh Harbour, then catching the next ferry over to Man-O-War. Once there, you can either rent a golf cart, or walk since the town itself is quite small.
No trip to Man-O-War would be complete without visiting The Sail Shop for one of their famous handmade bags. Sturdy, durable and available in a variety of colours, they will last for years to come. A visit to Joeís Studio and The Painted Fish are always staples for souvenirs and gifts. Hibiscus Cafe creates delicious Bahamian cuisine and afterwards, a visit to the Man-O-War museum offers a unique look into Abacoís rich history. A walk on the beach is like no other, with the salty ocean air and powdery sand between your toes, certainly no one would want to leave.
Itís not hard to imagine yourself living or retiring on the Cay. Many of the locals who work on the mainland will tell you that once you step foot on the ferry boat to come home, the stress of the day just melts away. There are a number of homes available on the cay, but none quite as cozy and quiet as Birdís Acre. Adorned in cheery tropical colours, this 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom cottage is tucked away and surrounded by native shrubs for maximum privacy. You can sit on your porch with a cup of coffee and listen to the birds chirping in the trees and ocean waves on the beach. Sounds good to me!
